THE CITY IN BRIEF

Read the city in layers.

Founded as Attaleia in the 2nd century BCE, Antalya grew around a harbour that still shapes it: the Roman walls and gate, the Seljuk minaret and madrasa, and the Ottoman courtyard houses of Kaleici all stand within a short walk of the water. Start within Kaleici, the historic centre. Its street pattern, courtyard houses and harbour setting bring different periods into close conversation. Hadrian's Gate marks a Roman threshold; the Yivli Minare ensemble speaks to the Seljuk city. Perge and Aspendos are separate regional excursions, not stops on the same short urban walk.

Use this guide as an architectural itinerary rather than a live booking service. Confirm access, opening hours and transport with the relevant venue before departure.

For the world that built the Roman gate, read Hadrian's Gate and the Roman inheritance — Romanesque Architecture, Book V of the Architectural History Series, free to read online.

ATLAS ROUTES

Antalya in half a day

Kaleici loop — about two hours

An unhurried exterior-focused walk from the Roman gate to the historic harbour, through the old-town lanes. Terrain includes uneven paving and slopes.

ABOUT 2 HOURSMOSTLY WALKINGKALEICI
  1. Hadrian's GateBegin at the Roman threshold
  2. Kaleici lanesOverhanging upper floors and shaded passages
  3. Yivli MinareThe Seljuk layer of the city
  4. Kesik MinareTemple, church and mosque in one layered shell
  5. Old HarbourDescend to the Roman harbour and the water

Opening hours and ticket availability must be checked live before departure. The Antalya Museum is currently closed to visitors; the routes above do not depend on it.

How the programs relate: the two half-day routes stand alone or combine into a full old-town day — take the morning loop, then the afternoon harbour route. The hour-by-hour program further down shows one combined day, and Perge and Aspendos stay a separate study day.

Approximate walking distances — Morning: Hadrian's Gate → Kaleici lanes 200 m; → Yivli Minare 500 m; → Kesik Minare 300 m; → Old Harbour 700 m downhill. Afternoon: Old Harbour → Karaalioglu Park 900 m; → Hidirlik Tower 400 m; → cliff-top promenade 500 m. Distances are approximate; use the map links for step-by-step directions.

Next step: open the route in Google Maps, then check tickets for the stops that need them — Perge and Aspendos on the study day; the old-town stops are mostly exterior readings.

Ancient-city study day

Plan Perge and Aspendos as a separate excursion, by tour, car or taxi — not on foot and not inside the same short city walk. Compare the organisation of a Roman urban site with a theatre conceived for collective spectacle. Perge sits about 18 km east of the centre; Aspendos about 45 km east. Check site conditions, transport and opening times in advance, and allow a full day including travel.

Next step: check tickets on the official museum site, then open the regional route.

DAY TOUR · TRAVEL PROGRAMME

One day in Antalya, hour by hour.

The Kaleici loop fills the morning; the afternoon is for the old town's courtyard layer and a slower harbour pace. Perge and Aspendos stay a separate study day, exactly as the routes above recommend. Times are indicative — confirm opening hours and site conditions live before you set out. Note: the Antalya Museum is currently closed to visitors, so the afternoon below leans on Kaleici interiors and the harbour rather than the museum galleries.

  1. 09:00 · Hadrian's Gate — begin where the guide begins: the Roman triumphal gateway read against today's street.
  2. 09:30 · Kaleici walking loop — old-town lanes, overhanging upper floors and shaded passages toward Yivli Minare, the Seljuk layer of the city.
  3. 11:30 · The historic harbour — descend to the Roman harbour and read the old town from the water.
  4. 13:00 · Lunch in Kaleici — courtyard restaurants inside the walls; keep the pace slow in summer heat.
  5. 15:00 · Old-town interiors & courtyards — the indoor layer of Kaleici, or a return pass through the lanes for the details missed in the morning.
  6. 17:30 · Harbour & cliff-top views — end the day above the marina as the light drops over the bay.
  7. Day two · Perge & Aspendos — the ancient-city study day: a Roman street plan in the morning, the great theatre in the afternoon.
